Obituary for Joseph A. Byers Sr.

Joseph A. Byers Sr. age 94 of Bristol passed away January 16, 2022 at St. Mary Medical Center in Langhorne, PA. Born in Phila., and a resident of Bristol for the past 38 years and formerly of Levittown. Joe attended St. Joseph Prep School, Class of 1945, where he won the Maxwell Award for Best Athlete in Philadelphia in 1944. He attended Holy Cross University where he played football in the 1946 Orange Bowl. Joe had the longest run in Orange Bowl history until Hershel Walker beat his record in 1982. He was employed as a Building Inspector with the State of New Jersey and retired in 1999 after 15 years of service. Joe was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII. He will be sadly missed by his beloved wife Mary (Agocs) Byers, his children: Mary Joyce Novella (Frank), Andrew M. Byers, Elizabeth Bell (Jack), Matthew Byers (Lee), Stephen Byers and 2 step-children: Walter Hersing (Karen) and Cheryl Hersing (Bob). Joseph was sadly preceded in death by his firstborn son, Joseph Jr., and his sister, Doris Byers Moffatt. Also survived by 10 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Relatives and friends are invited to attend Joseph’s Visitation at the Tomlinson Funeral Home, 2207 Bristol Pike, Bensalem, Pa 19020 on Monday, January 24th from 6:00-7:00 PM. A second Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 25th at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 601 Bristol Pike, Croydon, Pa 19021 from 10:00-10:30 AM followed by his Mass at 10:30 AM.
