Obituary for Susan J. Collins

Susan J. (Ramsey) Collins of Bensalem, PA and Avalon, NJ passed away Saturday, May 14, 2022, after battling glioblastoma for 21 months. She was young at heart and lived every moment of her 75-year spiritual journey to the fullest. She was born in Philadelphia, PA on May 2, 1947, to the late John and Marion (Seader) Ramsey and resided on Shelmire and Lansing Streets in Northeast Philadelphia throughout her childhood. Susan attended Redeemer Lutheran Grade School and was in the 1st graduating class of George Washington High School in 1965. Susan married her high school sweetheart, George, in 1969, after achieving her LPN from The University of Pennsylvania Presbyterian Hospital and settled in Bensalem Township for the last 50 years where she and George raised their family. As a loving and supportive mother, Susan was regularly seen and heard cheering for her children at sporting events, fundraising for Varsity jackets or Scout camping trips, and supporting their academic interests. Susan was a lifelong Believer and was very happy to find Bensalem Presbyterian Church in Bensalem, PA. Along the way, she earned an RN from Bucks County Community College and lovingly cared for patients for over 36 years at Jeanes Hospital and other hospitals throughout Bucks County. She especially loved telemetry and medical surgical nursing and had a special place in her heart for the human condition.

Susan was a creative who dabbled in a variety of hobbies. She had a passion for gardening (“look at my tomatoes!”), was an accomplished seamstress, loved dancing to the Oldies or strutting her stuff to the Mummers or belting out an Andrea Bocelli song. She also loved cooking for her extended family at Thanksgiving, cheering on Notre Dame’s football team, and going all in every Halloween. Her place of peace was Avalon, NJ where she felt connected to God, felt the presence of her parents, and made great memories with family and community. Susan found joy in biking the blocks of Avalon, kayaking in the bay, and floating over ocean waves with her toes up! She was an enthusiastic member of the Avalon Garden Club, South Jersey Stitchers, Quilts of Valor and was a member of Our Saviour Lutheran Church, Stone Harbor, NJ. During the winter months, Susan and her husband, George, liked to visit The Villages, FL, and always looked forward to their weekly driveway parties with friends.

Susan’s greatest love and joy was her loving family, especially her husband of 52 years, George Campbell Collins, Jr. Susan is survived by her three loving children and their spouses, George and Eady Collins III, Jill and Sean DeHaven, and Andy and Meghan Collins. Grandchildren, Connor Collins, Jacob Collins, Hannah Collins, James DeHaven, George Collins IV and Lillian Collins. She is also survived by her sister Nancy and Peter Rossini, sister-in-law Barbara and Bill Rhydderch, and brother-in-law Jim and Chris Collins. Susan was predeceased by her loving parents, John and Marion (Seader) Ramsey, her sister Linda Lee Griffith, and many other loving relatives and friends.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Susan’s Celebration of Life on Thursday, June 9, 2022. Visitation from 9 to 11 AM at the Bensalem Presbyterian Church, 2826 Bristol Rd., Bensalem, PA 19020, followed by her Service at 11 AM. Interment will be private.
